This book revisits Hegel’s aesthetic theory and its critiques as a prelude to exploring the philosophy of naturalist aesthetics. The author then applies these reflections to cinematic aesthetics, without subscribing to any fixed or proposed philosophical framework. Instead, he poses questions that lead to further questioning, challenging the authority of criticism and stripping it—so to speak—of some of its weapons, in favor of creative individuality and the expansive possibilities of experimentation in the arts, especially cinema.
